About the book: In her book The Serviceberry, Robin Wall Kimmerer, a scientist and Anishinaabe member, explores the concept of a "gift economy" inspired by the serviceberry plant and its relationship with the natural world. The book uses the serviceberry, which relies on reciprocity with birds and bees for pollination and seed dispersal, as a model for understanding how to cultivate relationships based on generosity, interconnectedness, and gratitude. Kimmerer argues that we can learn from the serviceberry and the principles of a gift economy to reimagine our own values and relationships, moving away from a scarcity-based system towards one of abundance and mutual flourishing.
