Dane County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Officer-Involved Firearm Discharge

At the request of the Madison Police Department, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating an incident involving a Madison Police Officer discharging their firearm during an encounter that took place on the night of Friday, September 6th. Dane County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit and Reconstruction Team went to the scene on West Gilman Street to process the area for evidence. Additionally, Sheriff’s Office detectives responded and began conducting interviews with the appropriate parties. “Our team has been working diligently through the weekend to gather all relevant information. We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation, ensuring that all details are carefully reviewed,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses. ***UPDATE*** September 11, 2024 – The Madison Police Officer who fired his duty weapon during the September 6th incident on West Gilman Street is Nathaniel Belanger, age 26. Officer Belanger has been with MPD since May of 2020. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate.
