In February, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office joined the City of Madison Police Department to conduct traffic grant deployments focused on OWI and seatbelt enforcement.
During just two seatbelt grant deployments, 129 traffic citations and 28 warnings were issued. Those stops resulted in 2 felony arrests and one arrest on an outstanding warrant.
The agencies conducted 8 focused OWI enforcement deployments, issuing 386 citations and making 4 OWI arrests. During these operations, they made 3 felony arrests and 8 arrests for outstanding warrants.
“Traffic safety affects everyone in Dane County,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett. “During these overtime grant deployments, our deputies are enforcing all traffic laws. But as a community, we share this responsibility. Drive the speed limit, wear your seatbelt, and never drive under the influence.”
These overtime enforcement grants are provided by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety. The Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the Madison Police Department continue their grant efforts in March, including a new grant focused on speed enforcement. Just last night, Sheriff’s deputies issued 37 speeding citations. Four of these citations were for drivers going over 80 mph in a 55 mph zone.
