The Dane County Sheriff’s Office launched a traffic safety initiative in the town of Blooming Grove last month, aiming to change driver behavior and improve safety across the neighborhood.
Crash data from the WI Department of Transportation, combined with the township's unique urban environment, made it a prime location for a DDACTS (Data-Driven Approach to Crime and Traffic Safety) operation.
Between 2020 and 2025, 416 crashes occurred along the Milwaukee Street/Fair Oaks Avenue corridor. The crashes injured 125 people, including 11 pedestrians and 7 bicyclists.
“Our deputies aren’t here just to write tickets,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett. “Our goal is to change driver behavior, prevent crashes, and make the neighborhood safer.”
From May 13 to 31, Sheriff’s deputies working in the DDACTS project issued 275 citations and 95 warnings.
“We’re seeing some very high-risk driving behavior,” said Sgt. Jason Russell. “We’ve issued several citations to drivers traveling more than double the 25 mph speed limit, and running red lights is also very common.”
The Sheriff’s Office Traffic Team, along with patrol deputies from the Southeast Precinct, will provide focused traffic enforcement in the area through mid-November.
