Dane County Executive Agard Announces Jeff Mitchell as Next Henry Vilas Zoo Director

Mitchell brings more than 30 years of experience in zoos, aquariums, animal care and conservation

DANE COUNTY – Dane County Executive Melissa Agard announced today that Jeff Mitchell has accepted her offer to serve as the next Director of Dane County’s Henry Vilas Zoo. Mitchell’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the Dane County Board, with an anticipated start date in late October.

Mitchell brings more than 30 years of experience in zoos, aquariums, animal care, conservation and organizational leadership. He began his career at Chicago’s John G. Shedd Aquarium, where he spent more than a decade working in animal husbandry, education and outreach, research, breeding programs and conservation. His career has also included leadership positions at Brookfield Zoo, Sea Life Minnesota, the Cincinnati Zoo and Henson Robinson Zoo.

“Jeff brings the experience, knowledge and positive leadership we need as we look to the future of the Henry Vilas Zoo,” said Dane County Executive Melissa Agard. “Throughout this search, we were focused on finding a leader who understands that everything we do begins with our mission: providing exceptional care for our animals, advancing conservation, educating and inspiring our visitors, and serving the public. I am confident Jeff will work collaboratively with our dedicated staff and build on the strong foundation already in place.”

Since 2020, Mitchell has served as Manager and Director of the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo in Saskatchewan, Canada, where he oversees zoo and park operations, including animal care, facilities, budgeting, exhibit development, strategic planning, fundraising and accreditation.

During Mitchell’s tenure, the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo has received multiple awards for excellence in habitat and education program design, secured a five-year accreditation from Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums, and achieved World Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation in 2025.

“I am honored to join the exceptional team at Dane County’s Henry Vilas Zoo and contribute to the strong foundation already in place,” said Mitchell. “As one of North America’s few admission-free, community-supported zoos, Henry Vilas Zoo holds a special place in the community and has an important role in conservation, education and creating meaningful connections with wildlife. I am especially excited to support the new Edge of Africa project and help shape this important next chapter with our staff, volunteers, partners and community supporters.”

Agard also thanked Janine Wachter for serving as Interim Zoo Director for most of 2026. Wachter stepped into the role from the Alliant Energy Center, where she serves as Deputy Director, and provided leadership and continuity at the Zoo while Dane County conducted its search for a permanent director. Wachter will return to her position at the Alliant Energy Center following the transition.
