Dane County Board Chair Scott McDonell today announced the process for filling the vacancy in the office of County Clerk. County Clerk Bob Ohlsen retired from the office effective February 4, 2011.
State statutes provide for the vacancy to be filled by appointment of the County Board for the remainder of the term (until January 7th, 2013). The intention is that the Board will act on the appointment at its April 14th, 2011 meeting. The office will be filled by election at the fall election in November 2012, for a 4-year term beginning January 8, 2013. The annual salary is currently $82,420.
Chair McDonell is requesting interested parties to submit resumes to the County Board Office with a letter of interest by Friday, April 8th, 2011. A public hearing will be conducted by County Board Chair McDonell on Monday April 11th, 2011 in Room 354 of the City County Building beginning at 7pm. Interested parties are asked to attend the hearing to describe their qualifications for the position. Members of the public may testify at the hearing and will have a limit of 3 minutes.
Under Chapter 59.23 of the Wisconsin Statutes, the County Clerk's responsibilities include: coordinating county-wide elections; issuing marriage licenses (issuing approximately 3,000 annually, and collecting and paying funds); administering dog license fees (receiving and distributing licenses to municipal treasurers); serving as recording secretary to the County Board of Supervisors, monitoring compliance with open meetings and records laws, and maintaining files of contracts, resolutions, ordinances, committee minutes and other documents.
